Painting in oil on cork allows James Wheeler to achieve subtle textures and although contemporary, his pieces have a timeless quality allowing for viewer interpretation evoked by his use of light and atmosphere of the landscape. He wants people to view his work and have it stir emotion and memory. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1944 and went to the Glasgow School of Art, later becoming one of the UK's leading carpet designers. He draws his inspiration from visits to his homeland, Scotland, and from holidays spent in France, Venice, and the Mediterranean islands. Closer to home his love of the Lake District and magnificent Yorkshire moors also inspire him.
